Relying on God during Stressful Times - Woonie Chan

"So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 6:31-34

Despite having had the opportunities to live in the UK and US for studies in the past, it had never occurred to me that I would want to live anywhere outside Hong Kong for the rest of my life. Born and raised in this former British colony with a pretty well-paid and secure government job, I found no reason to emigrate. However, being urged by my wife and having moved to the UK in February 2022, it still feels a bit surreal sometimes.

Though not having the same financial comfort anymore, it is still a great blessing to have new experiences here and be able to continue to work in arts management. With a challenging job of very wide scope, I have to rely much more on God for provision and guidance. Praying every day before going to work suddenly becomes more pressing and much needed. Sometimes I think that God uses this relocation to teach me to trust Him more instead of just relying on myself to accomplish various tasks.

When work or family life becomes too overwhelming and challenging, I can only pray and trust that God is with me and He will lead me through the storms. Having eternal hope in Him and trying to see things beyond the present circumstances, the stress and anguish can gradually subside.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7
