Incomparable - by Andrew Wilson
Next up in our summer book reviews series, Katherine Gill, reviews ‘Incomparable’
“To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?” (Isaiah 40:18)
How do we make sense of a God who no one has seen, but who has perfectly revealed Himself to us through Jesus? This is, I think, the key question of the book ‘Incomparable’ by Andrew Wilson. The truths contained in it, in one sense, are nothing that we have not heard before. However, Andrew Wilson gives us a fresh new perspective on different elements of God’s character and helps us to appreciate the things about Him that we often take for granted.
Confusingly, the more we discover of God, the less we understand. Right worship of God means acknowledging His complete otherness. He is not a bigger and better version of us, but the perfect standard by which we measure everything else. While explaining the Bible in a clear way with helpful illustrations, Wilson is careful not to humanise God. Instead, he reveals our human limitations and warns us against attempting to simplify Him.
This book further challenges us to love God for who He is, rather than the things He does or provides for us. Wilson reminds us that the highest pleasure in life is not the gifts that God can give us, but relationship with God himself, as the very definition of what is good, true, and lovely. Helpfully, his reflections draw out the Bible’s complete picture of God’s character, showing his unchanging nature as it is revealed in both the Old and New Testaments.
Ultimately, the goal of Incomparable is for our knowledge of God to lead to a greater worship of Him. With this aim in mind, there are pauses throughout, with resources for further study, suggestions for prayer, and passages to meditate on. Each section is short and readable (only about two pages), ideal for daily devotions. I would hugely recommend this book for anyone who wants a fresh understanding of God’s character and hope that God uses it as a blessing to you.
